American Association of University Women International Fellowships
Supports full-time graduate study or research for women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, are completing or have completed an undergraduate degree, plan to pursue a U.S. graduate program, and intend to return to their home countries to pursue a professional career. English proficiency is required. Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of women and girls in the home country. SENIORS and GRADUATES may apply. American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships and Grants
Fellowships of up to $20,000 support up to a year, and grants of approximately $4,000 support one to three months, of research, study, or creative work in one or more Scandinavian countries. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply; must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Some projects may require proficiency in the language of the host country; for other projects, proficiency may not be necessary but some ability in the language is desirable. Graduate students planning dissertation research are given priority for the fellowships, whereas the grants are considered especially suitable to graduating seniors and college graduates. For SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS in engineering or the natural or applied sciences. No special consideration is given to students in astronautical engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with excellent academic records and research experience who have shown initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field. The scholarship is for $10,000 with the possibility of renewal beyond the first year. Applicants must be nominated by a faculty member. Boren National Security Education Program Scholarships
Supports a term or year of study abroad, for the purpose of equipping Americans with an understanding of less commonly studied languages and cultures in regions critical to U.S. interests. NSEP emphasizes the importance of language study as a major component of the study abroad program. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be an integral part of the proposal. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records, language and international interests. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply for the undergraduate scholarships. (Boren Fellowships are also offered for GRADUATE STUDENTS, who should visit the Office of International Programs website for further information.) Carries a one-year service requirement. Provides young American professionals with nine-month (Sept-May), executive level internships in the federal government and private sector in Germany. Focus is on gaining an in-depth understanding of issues facing the European Union and Germany today. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 23-34 years old, college GRADUATES (master’s degree preferred), with some professional experience in business administration, economics, journalism and mass communications, law, political science, or public affairs/public policy. 20 awards nationwide. Bosch Foundation Student Service International Internships
Offers young Americans the opportunity to gain professional experience in student affairs in Germany for nine months (Sept.-May). Must have a college degree by the start of the program and at least two years of college-level German language or equivalent. Open to all disciplines. Campus Compact Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Awards
Recognizes exceptional undergraduates for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to sustain this work among their peers and within their institution. Applicants may be FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS. Citizenship is open. Award consists of a $1250 grant for the winner's professional development plus a $250 donation to a service organization the winner has been involved with. Carnegie Endowment for Peace Junior Fellows Program
Supports one year of service at the Endowment in Washington D.C. Junior Fellows provide research assistance to senior associates on international policy issues, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony, and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials. Applicants must be SENIORS or have GRADUATED within the past year; must not have begun graduate study. Must have strong academic records with substantial coursework in such areas as international affairs, political science, economics, or history. 8-10 awards nationwide. May be U.S. citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the U.S. for the award period. The U may endorse up to two candidates. Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarships
Honors high school seniors and college students for outstanding achievements, leadership, and commitment to community service. Applicants may be high school seniors or college students currently in their FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, or JUNIOR year. Must be a U.S. citizen attending a U.S. accredited educational institution. Selection criteria include demonstrated character, outstanding achievements, exceptional leadership ability, a serious commitment to community service, academics, and potential to improve the quality of human life. Some priority is given to candidates whose parents are employed in education, government, or other areas of public service. 12-24 grants will be awarded for $2500-$5000 per year and are usable for tuition, room and board, books or other academic expenses. For one year of graduate study in engineering, math, or science at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, must be age 19-26 and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. Must have outstanding academic record (GPA of 3.7 or higher) and research experience. 10-15 scholarships are awarded nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Award includes generous living allowance, tuition and fees, travel grant; approximate value $44,000. Institutional endorsement is required; the U of M-Twin Cities may endorse up to two candidates. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals
Year-long program beginning in July provides opportunities for young adults to gain cultural understanding, education, and professional experience in Germany. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, age 18-24 at the start of the program; high school, college (FRESHMAN through SENIOR), or GRADUATE STUDENT. Includes classroom instruction and an internship experience. Award covers international and in-country travel, seminiars, and accommodations with a host family. Preferred fields include business, technology, engineering, and agriculture. All fields may apply. German language proficiency is strongly recommended but not required. 75 awards nationwide. Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarships
Provides up to $50,000 per year for up to six years of graduate or professional school in the U.S. or abroad. Applicants must be college SENIORS or recent GRADUATES with GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students who have already begun graduate study are not eligible. Citizenship is open. Must have significant financial need with parents’ assets and income factored in. Selection criteria include academic achievement and intelligence, will to succeed, leadership and public service, and participation in or strong appreciation of the arts and humanities. U.S. government-sponsored scholarships support intensive summer language study in the "critical need languages," Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu, at approved language institutes abroad. Offers two-month-long internship opportunities in the German parliament. Applicants should be advanced undergraduates (JUNIOR or SENIOR) or GRADUATE STUDENTS in fields such as political science, international relations, law, history, economics, or German. Applicants must have strong German language skills; some knowledge of the German legislative process; outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must be U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions. Department of Energy Graduate Fellowships
Offered in the areas of computational science and nuclear security stewardship science. Both provide generous support for up to four years towards a Ph.D in an appropriate program. Supports undergraduate or graduate study in science, social science, engineering, and technology fields essential to homeland security. Undergraduate Scholarship applicants must be SOPHOMORES; Graduate Fellowship applicants must be SENIORS, GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in their first year of study toward a Masters or Ph.D.. Must be US citizen with GPA of 3.30 or higher and pursuing a degree in an eligible field. Carries a summer internship commitment. Gilman International Scholarships
For a semester or academic year of study abroad worldwide, for undergraduates with significant financial need who are receiving Pell Grants. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply. Awards are for up to $5000, with the amount varying depending on the length of study and student need. Gilman Scholars studying certain languages may also apply for an additional Critical Need Language Supplement of up to $3000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, Pell Grant recipients, must be applying to or accepted by a study abroad program of at least 4 weeks in length for which the U will award academic credit. Soros Fellowships for New Americans
Provides up to two years of support for graduate or professional school in the United States in any field. Applicant must be either a permanent resident, a naturalized U.S. citizen, or the child of two parents who are naturalized citizens; under 31 years old at the time of application; must hold bachelor’s degree by the beginning of the award. Selection criteria include strong academics and character traits such as creativity, originality, initiative, a capacity for accomplishment, and a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Supports a 2-3-month research stay at a Swiss university. Applicants must be currently enrolled SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS and must provide written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that she/he will accept you for a research stay in his/her group. Knowledge of German, French, or Italian is helpful but not required. $700 per month scholarship is paid upon completion of the research stay. Awarded to undergraduates for graduate study leading to a career in government or elsewhere in public service. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school and participate in a Truman Scholars Leadership Week in the summer after the Junior year. Udall Native American Congressional Internships
Supports a ten-week summer internship in a congressional office or federal agency in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students with a demonstrated interest in areas related to tribal public policy, including tribal governance, law, health, education, justice, natural resource protection, or economic development. JUNIORS, SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Applicants must meet the Udall Foundation’s definition of Native American or Alaska Native, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice
